SSL Certificates FAQs
What is SSL?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security) is an encryption-based security protocol that enables encrypted communication between a website and a web browser. It prevents unauthorized parties from accessing or seeing data exchanged between a site and its visitors.
What is an SSL certificate?
SSL can only be implemented by websites that have an SSL certificate (technically a “TLS certificate”). An SSL certificate is like an ID card or a badge that proves someone is who they say they are. SSL certificates are stored and displayed on the Web by a website’s or application’s server.
Certificate authorities (CA) are responsible for issuing SSL certificates.
What are the types of SSL certificates?
There are several different types of SSL certificates:
- Single-domain: SSL certificate will protect one domain name only (a “domain” is the address of the website, like www.servmix.com).
- Wildcard: SSL certificate will protect only one domain including its subdomains. For example, www.servmix.com and my.servmix.com.
- Multi-domain: SSL certificate can be used for protecting unrelated domains.
What is SSL certificate validation process?
SSL certificates come with different validation levels. When you purchase a digital certificate, the Certificate Authority (CA) that’s issuing it will put your website or organization through a process called validation. The intensity of this validation depends on the type of SSL certificate you’ve chosen:
- Domain Validation (DV) SSL:
This is the most basic type of SSL validation and can be completed in one step. It’s being issued within minutes. - Organization Validation (OV) SSL:
CA validates the organization before issuing an OV SSL. They are the best for medium businesses where a click on the padlock indicates their company name. It’s being issued within 1 – 3 days. - Extended Validation (EV) SSL:
EV certificates display trust at the topmost level, thus, large enterprises and corporations usually prefer EV SSL. The rigorous CA validation process before issuance of an EV SSL. It’s being issued within 1 – 2 weeks.
Can I change the domain name in the SSL certificate after issuing it?
